How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

With the UK government’s commitment to being net-zero by 2050, electric vehicles (EVs) have taken centre stage as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional petrol or diesel cars. But as more individuals make the switch to electric, one of the most common questions is: How long does it take to charge an electric car? If you’re wondering just that you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to find out.

What Influences the Time It Takes to Charge an EV?

There isn’t just one answer when it comes to how long it takes to charge an electric car. In fact, there are several factors that will influence EV charge times, from the size of the car battery to the type of EV charge point.

Charging Infrastructure

One of the key determinants of charging time is the type of charging infrastructure, or EV charge point, available. There are different levels of EV charge points, all of which will have different impacts on overall EV charging times.

Level 1 (Home Charging)

This is the most basic level of charging, usually carried out at home and involves plugging your electric vehicle into a standard 3-plug household outlet. While convenient, Level 1 charging is the slowest option and may take anywhere from 8 to 20 hours to fully charge a typical EV, so it is not commonly recommended, especially with the more advanced home EV charge points now available. It is not considered more of a ‘last resort’ when it comes to EV charging.

Level 2 (Public Charging Stations or Home Installations)

Level 2 EV chargers provide a faster charging rate compared to Level 1 and will consist of an actual EV charger that needs to be professionally installed. Depending on the electric car model and the capacity of the Level 2 charger, it will typically take between 4 to 8 hours for a full charge.

Level 3 (DC Fast Charging)

This is the fastest charging option currently available and is often referred to as rapid charging. DC fast chargers can recharge an electric car to 80% capacity in as little as 30 minutes, making them ideal for long-distance travel and are often found in public places

Battery Capacity

The battery capacity of an electric car is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and plays a crucial role in determining charging time. Larger battery capacities will generally take longer to charge, however, advancements in battery technology are continually pushing the boundaries, allowing for faster charging without compromising on range.

The 80% Rule

Charging an electric car is not a linear process and charging speed tends to slow down as the battery approaches full capacity. Many EV charging experts therefore recommend the “80% rule” which suggests charging an EV up to 80% is more time-efficient than pushing for a full 100% charge. This is particularly relevant when using fast-charging stations, as the last 20% may take as long as the first 80%.

Technological Advancements

Technology is constantly developing and advancing and the EV industry is no different. Continuous research is leading to new improvements in charging technology, meaning newer models of electric cars may come equipped with faster charging capabilities that will help to reduce overall charging times.

As you have just read, the time it takes to charge an electric car is influenced by various factors, including the type of charging infrastructure, battery capacity, and technological advancements. However, you should be able to gain a good estimate of how long it may take to charge your EV based on the charge point you use and your vehicle’s battery size.
