Totally net-zero by 2050? Yep, that’s the goal of GOV UK, and they’re hoping the uptake of electric vehicles will get us there. With their ban on the sale and production of gasoline vehicles by 2030, grants and financial aid are being given towards the purchase and installation of EV charge points to help facilitate drivers and businesses making the switch to electric.
The Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) are driving the grant incentive, meaning EV drivers and businesses can benefit from saving up to 75% of the initial upfront costs of purchasing charge points and their installation, to help accelerate EV ownership and usage across the country, as well as reduce overall carbon emissions and improve air quality.
As of 2022, there have been some changes to the OZEV grant schemes, so we’ve sifted through all the government docs and laid out all the information you need to know. Find out how much money you can save and which grant is right for you.
The OZEV grant for home EV charge points has been updated and is now called the OZEV Electric Chargepoint Grant (formerly known as the Electric Vehicle Homecharging Scheme). Its eligibility criteria has also changed and is now exclusively for residents within rental accommodation and landlords, as opposed to any homeowner, and contributes to the initial cost and installation of an EV charge point.
Rental Property Residents are eligible for a grant amount of up to £350 towards their charge point unit and cost of installation. They must have off-street parking and an eligible vehicle to qualify and only one charge point can be claimed.
Flat Owner-Occupiers can also benefit from the OZEV grant, receiving up to £350 of funding towards the purchase and installation of a smart EV charge point for their home. Flat owner-occupiers are only able to claim for one charge point and must have off-street parking and an eligible vehicle.
Residentially Let Property Landlords are eligible for a grant amount based on the number of charge point sockets. Some charge points have more than one socket to enable the charging of more than one vehicle at a time. The grant provides up to £350 per charge point socket, meaning a charge point with two sockets would be eligible for a £700 contribution. Landlords can receive up to 200 grants per year for residential properties and can be across just one or several properties. There is no limit on the amount of charge point sockets per property, but they must be installed across private parking spaces.
Housing Associations can utilise the OZEV grant to benefit from up to 75% of the contribution of the purchase and installation of up to 200 charge point sockets per year for residential properties. Up to £350 can be claimed per charge point socket, across an infinite amount of property sites, as long as they are to be installed across private parking spaces.
Commercially Let Property Landlords can claim against the OZEV grant if they have dedicated parking that is for staff or fleet use of the tenant or prospective tenant of their property, and not for public use. They are able to receive up to 100 grants per year of up to £350 per charge point socket. If a charge point has two sockets, then £700 could be claimed. There is no limit on the amount of charge point sockets per property, but they must be installed across private parking spaces.
The OZEV have put the EV Infrastructure Grant in place to help businesses and organisations who rent, lease or manage residential properties install electric vehicle (EV) charge points in their car parks. The grant contributes toward the infrastructure needed for EV charge points, such as electrical cabling, as well as the installation of the actual charge points, which are carried out at the same time as the infrastructure.
The grant, therefore, means landlords do not need to install all the EV charge points that the infrastructure accommodates. They can therefore future-proof their site by creating the infrastructure now to enable the installation of charge points later on. Up to 30 grants can be claimed per financial year, with 1 grant per property.
Note that this is a separate grant from the EV Chargepoint Grant for landlords, which contributes towards the upfront costs of charge point equipment and their installation, not infrastructure. Both grants can be used for the same site, but not for the same charge points
Residential & Commercial Landlords can receive up to £500 for each parking space that the charging infrastructure will provide a unique charge point socket, either at that point in time or in the future. Landlords can then claim an additional amount of up to £350 towards the purchase and installation of each charge point socket. The total amount of funding available cannot be more than 75% of the total charge point installation and infrastructure costs and is capped at £30,000 per application. The property must be a multi-unit residential property, such as an apartment block or an estate consisting of multiple buildings sharing a common parking area. The car park must have at least 5 parking spaces that are clearly marked.
Social Housing Providers can benefit from up to £30,000 to support the infrastructure for and installation of EV charge points for their property’s residential car park. Up to £350 per charge point can be claimed towards EV charge point purchase and installation, and up to £500 per parking space towards charging infrastructure. The property must have at least 5 parking spaces and be a multi-unit residential property or an estate with multiple buildings that share a common parking area.
Property Factors can use the EV Infrastructure Grant to claim up to 75% of the costs of EV charge point infrastructure, unit purchase and installation with a cap of £30,000 per application. Properties must be multi-unit and for residential use, such as an apartment block or estate. Up to £500 can be claimed for infrastructure per parking space and up to £350 per charge point. The building must be a multi-unit property with at least 5 parking spaces.
Small or medium-sized businesses can use the OZEV EV Infrastructure Grant to help install EV charge points in their car parks that are reserved for their fleet or employee use. The grant provides funding towards the infrastructure needed for EV charge points as well as the installation of the charge points themselves.
The grant means businesses do not need to install all the EV charge points that the infrastructure allows at once. Instead, they can put the infrastructure in place now to enable future charge point installation. Up to 5 grants can be claimed by a business in total. Each grant needs to be for a different site that the business owns, leases or rents.
Note that this grant can be used alongside the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) for the same site, but not for the same charge points.
Small & Medium Businesses must be VAT registered or registered with Companies House and have 249 employees or less. In addition, they must have received less than €200,000 of public support within the last 3 financial years. The charge points installed must be for fleet or staff use only and the car park must be off-street, clearly associated with the business premises, and have at least 5 parking spaces. Companies can receive up to £500 per parking space towards infrastructure and up to £350 per charge point purchase and installation. The total amount of funding available cannot be more than 75% of the total charge point installation and infrastructure costs and is capped at £15,000 per application.
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is another OZEV grant that is a voucher-based scheme designed to support businesses and organisations wanting to implement workplace EV charging. As of April 2022, there have been some changes to the WCS grant and its eligibility, meaning it is now available to SMEs, small accommodation businesses, charities and registered businesses.
Small Accommodation Businesses with 249 or fewer employees can benefit from up to £14,000 in grant funding that can be used to install EV charge points for fleet and/or employee use. Up to 40 sockets can be applied across all sites, with a maximum of £350 to be claimed for each charge point socket. Hotels, B&Bs, camping grounds, recreational vehicle and trailer parks, as well as holiday and other short-stay accommodation, can benefit from the WCS grant but must have off-street parking. There is no restriction on who may use the parking facilities, whether that be customers, employees or guests.
Charities are also eligible to apply for the WCS, benefiting from up to £14,000 (£350 per charging socket and up to 40 sockets) toward the initial purchase and installation of EV charge points. Off-street parking must be available and the organisation must be able to prove to be a registered charity.
Registered Businesses can receive up to £14,000 in grant funding to support the purchase and installation of workplace EV charge points. Up to £350 per charge point socket is redeemable for up to 40 sockets across all the business’ sites. Registered businesses must have off-street private parking that is strictly for fleet or employee use and have not received more than €200,000 of public support within the last 3 financial years.
