There are many benefits to driving an electric vehicle (EV). Fewer maintenance costs, reduced carbon emissions and no need to visit petrol stations and fill up on fuel. The one thing you will need to do is visit charging stations, but installing a home EV charge point could save you trips to public charge points and work out to be more cost-effective!
In fact, it’s estimated that 80% of electric car charging takes place at home. EV drivers with home chargers can simply pull up to their house, plug in their vehicle and wake up to a fully charged battery in the morning, making it a very convenient option for many drivers.
But how do you install a home charger safely? We’ve got the down low on safe installations and the best way to do it.
There are two ways in which you can charge your EV at home. Firstly with a standard 3-pin plug, which is only recommended as a last resort. This is because it can comprise your home’s power supply, will take a very long time to charge your EV (approximately 30 hours!), and is a less safe option.
Secondly, is the use of a dedicated home EV charger. This is an EV charge point designed for homes and allows for easy, safe and efficient charging of an electric vehicle. The home charger is able to communicate with a vehicle, provide smart features and also allows you to take advantage of cheaper energy tariffs, which involves charging the EV during the cheapest time of day (usually overnight).
A home EV charger also allows for much faster charging speeds than the use of a standard 3-pin plug. A 7kW charge point is able to deliver approximately 30 miles of range within a 1-hour charge.
It is never advised to install a home EV charger yourself. Although we all love a bit of DIY, EV charge points should always be carried out by a qualified electrical engineer. This is because dealing with the power grid and electricity supply can be very dangerous for non-professionals. Having a charge point that is professionally installed also reduces the risk of something going wrong or being installed incorrectly, potentially causing damage to your EV.
Getting in touch with a reputable, reliable and experienced EV charge point solutions provider (like us), is, therefore, key to installing a home charger safely. The professionals will be able to advise on the type of charge point and equipment you’ll need for your type of vehicle and home set-up, as well as on the ideal location to install your charge point.
Professional charge point installers can also advise you on available grants. At eFaraday, we are an official OZEV installer and will support you in the application process, taking care of all the paperwork so you don’t have to.
