Who can install my home EV charge point?

You may be a DIY enthusiast, but installing home EV charge points is a job for a qualified electrical engineer. Because you’ll be dealing with the electrical grid and other power sources, it’s essential that the person carrying out the installation is experienced, fully trained and knows what they are doing. Although it’s an additional cost, it is likely to work out cost-effectively in the long run, due to you being less likely to experience any faults or issues with your system, that could become costly to fix in the future. When a home charger is installed it also needs to meet all the necessary regulations to ensure it is safe to use.

You don’t want to be responsible for giving the whole street a power cut, do you? Or damage your newly purchased charge point and EV! Plus, the warranty of your home charger could become void if it’s not installed correctly or by a certified electric engineer. Don’t risk it, get a professional OZEV approved installer (like us!) in and let them carry out the installation process.

Did you know that you can now pay monthly for your home charger? With no upfront cost, pay just £29.99 per month. Find out more here.

Why do I need professional help to install my home charge point?

As we said, it ensures your charge point is installed safely, correctly and in line with all the rules and regulations. At eFaraday, our engineers will also be able to help you place your charge point in the best location, based on the electrical grid and your power supply, as well as answer any of your burning charge point questions.

What needs to be installed?

What needs to be installed will depend on the type of charge point you’ve chosen to get installed at your home. For instance, whether you have opted for a tethered or untethered option. However, the main item to be installed will be the charge point unit itself and if tethered, the charging cable too.

If your chosen EV home charger includes other smart features, your engineer will set these up for you too, such as connecting to your WIFI and integrating with your smart device. You can view all the home EV charge points we install here.

How long does it take?

The home charger installation process usually takes a couple of hours, however, we advise that you are able to be at your property for the entire day in case the engineer encounters any unexpected works that might increase the duration of the installation process.

How do I prepare for the installation?

You won’t have to do much in order to prepare for your home charge point installation. Prior to the installation, one of the eFaraday team will have carried out a home survey to check your home is suitable for the EV charge point. Your engineer will therefore know what to expect and we will have previously discussed with you where you would like the charge point to be located.

Therefore, all we ask is that you:

  • Clear the area around the distribution board or electricity supply meter, as well as the cable run route. This could be under the stairs or in and around your garage.
  • Clear the area in which the charge point will be installed. Whether that’s moving flowerpots out the way or your vehicle off the drive, it’s good to give your engineer lots of space.
  • Have your WIFI password to hand, to ensure your engineer can finish setting up your new charge point smoothly.

If you have any questions or want to know more about what you can do to prepare for your installation, call us! The team are always happy to help.

What will happen on the day?

  1. On the day of your installation, you’ll receive confirmation from us on the time of your installation as well as an estimated time of arrival of your engineer.
  2. Once they arrive, you’ll be greeted by a friendly face before they get straight to work.
  3. All our engineers are fully qualified and are very knowledgeable. They’ll advise on the location of the charge point whilst keeping your personal preference in mind.
  4. Once the installation has taken place, they’ll make sure to carry out all the necessary tests and safety checks to confirm that your new home charger is working properly.
  5. They’ll then talk you through your new system and provide full training on how to use it as well as you can also give advice on how to drive your EV more efficiently.

Things to consider

The eFaraday team will talk you through any factors you may need to consider when organising your installation. However, the top questions to ask yourself are:

  • Do you park your EV in the same place each time?
  • If you have visitors over, can the charge point still reach your EV?
  • Do you want your charge point discreetly hidden or on full display?
  • Do you want your charge point wall-mounted or on a post?
  • If you can’t have the charge point installed in your chosen location, due to the power supply, do you have a second location that you could use?
